Omega Marks 60 Years of James Bond with New Watches

The Swiss luxury watchmaker has crafted two exclusive Seamaster timepieces.

It’s been 60 years since 007 made his iconic on-screen debut in the 1962 movie Doctor No. To mark the occasion, Omega is celebrating this milestone birthday of the James Bond franchise with the release of two Seamaster watches.

The Swiss luxury watchmaker has a soft spot for the legendary spy. In 1995, James Bond (then played by Pierce Brosnan) first wore an Omega on his wrist in GoldenEye, using a laser installed in the iconic timepiece to cut an escape hatch in the floor of Alex Trevelyan’s train.

Later, in 2012 Daniel Craig wore two different Omega Seamaster watches in Skyfall – the 42mm Planet Ocean 600m with a black dial and bezel, and the Aqua Terra with a blue dial. The actor also became the brand’s ambassador for the next five movies.

It was Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (who worked on every Bond film between GoldenEye and Casino Royale) that chose the stylish Seamaster model. “I was convinced that Commander Bond, a naval man, a diver and a discreet gentleman of the world would wear this watch,” she said.

Indeed, the Seamaster 300, originally released in 1957, was issued to military divers around the world, while a collection of 2nd generation Seamaster 300s was given to certain units in the MOD.

Now, Omega has unveiled two striking new anniversary watches. The first is a 42mm stainless Seamaster 300m inspired by the very first Omega timepiece worn by Brosnan in GoldenEye. Driven by a co-axial master chronometer caliber 8806 and presented on a mesh-style bracelet, the bezel and dial are made from blue oxalic anodized aluminum.

The dial is adorned with hypnotic laser-engraved waves, while the bezel features a diving scale filled with white Super-LumiNova. Perhaps most impressive of all, though, is the case back which replicates the famed 007 opening sequence with Bond in silhouette and a spinning gun barrel design. The striking timepiece is presented within a blue wooden box embossed with the original Diver 300m wave pattern.

Omega has also released the stunning watch in 18-karat Canopus Gold. The dial is made from natural grey silicon while the bezel is decorated with green and yellow treated diamonds, in a nod to Ian Fleming’s estate, Golden Eye, on the northern coastline of Jamaica.

Alongside the new James Bond watches, Omega has also crafted a collection of sailing bracelets in brushed titanium, stainless steel and black and grey nylon braiding, as well as stainless steel cufflinks with plates inspired by those worn by Craig in Quantum of Solace (2008).
